In season finale, tractor pullers are competing over the short ...

RAYNHAM -- Barbra ``Barbie" Perry sat in the driver's seat of a purple custom-built tractor called Little Brute II. She looked straight ahead, focusing on the dirt track in front of her. At the wave of the green flag, Perry thrust the throttle downward and Little Brute II -- engine roaring and wheels spinning -- lurched forward, dragging behind it a sled weighing more than 5 tons.

Little Brute's surge managed to drag the sled, dubbed Dominator II, far enough for a more than respectable showing in the tractor-pulling contest. Perry placed second in the 1,850-pound weight class.

She is something of a pro, having driven modified mini-tractors for 20 years, starting when she was 15. ``It's a fun ride," she says.

That is the view, too, of an enthusiastic subculture of motor sports fans who make up the Mass Mini Tractor Pullers Association, which holds tractor-pulling contests in Raynham several times a year.

Group formed to promote housing

Local business leaders are gearing up to house the Coast work force with an innovative plan to make use of government and private funding.

The Gulf Coast Business Council voted Tuesday to form a private nonprofit corporation to address affordable-housing issues in the three coastal counties.

Council President Brian Sanderson said the need for the corporation came about because national foundations approached the organization wanting to help with the local housing crisis.

"But they needed to see a plan that addressed affordable housing first," said Sanderson.

The corporation will look at buying land and partnering with national nonprofits and developers to create housing that is truly affordable.

"This is for work-force housing," said Sanderson.

State Appeals Court Order To Pay Contractor

State officials are appealing a judge's order to pay $1.2 million that they have withheld from a construction contractor who gave a consulting contract to former Gov. John G. Rowland in 2004 and then resisted a legislative investigation into it.

Superior Court Judge Joseph M. Shortall ruled last month that officials weren't justified in withholding the money from C.R. Klewin Northeast LLC on the basis of its resistance to a legislative committee's probe of the $5,000-a-month consulting job it gave Rowland after his 2004 resignation.

PMC finds good roads in Bibvewadi

Pune, October 13: HOMEMAKER Kirti Pathak is appalled at the state of the road outside her house in Bibvewadi. ``The stretch near Shani Mandir is completely washed away and accidents are frequent. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had repaired the road a few days ago, but the road is just as bad as it was, she said.

But the PMC believes that not a single road contractor has done any shoddy work in the past three years in areas under the Bibvewadi ward office . In addition, the civic body has not seized the deposit of any contractor for failing to do his job properly. This information was given by the civic administration to leader of Opposition Anil Shirole who sought it under the Right to Information Act.
