Off-site Built Homes, also known as True Modular homes, are built in accordance with the same building codes which traditional on-site built homes are constructed -- the Uniform Building Code (UBC) or International Building Code (IBC).

Off-site Built Homes are not to be confused with manufactured homes, a more common type of factory-built home constructed to a different building code -- the HUD code -- which can be more limited in architecture and not as favorable to appraise or finance.

Special session: Quick, clean tax relief

The Mississippi Legislature came to Jackson Thursday to consider a tax cut on modular homes. Amazingly, lawmakers met and completed the work on Gov. Haley Barbour's proposal in record time, about an hour and 45 minutes. Veteran lawmakers called it a record. Considering that legislators can argue anything ad nauseam, it was indeed a feat.

Unfortunately, solving the Gulf Coast's housing problems won't be happening anytime soon.

Housing remains the No. 1 issue for recovery from Hurricane Katrina. With more than 80,000 units destroyed or damaged, it will take years to replace needed housing. This tax break for modular housing will help.

Modular houses are built in factories and assembled on home sites, which can cut the time of obtaining one to about a month, when it can take up to a year for a conventional site-built home.

The new green home is particularly spacious much like a loft. It is completely solar and designed for a smaller lot. mkSolaire is available in two, three and four story options: www.mkSolaire.com/ .

"The roofs and windows address the challenges of the standard row house by sculpting natural light and fresh air into the center of the home," says Michelle Kaufmann, a Princeton University trained architect, founder and principal, Michelle Kaufmann Designs.

The house exclusively uses non-toxic, recyclable and renewable materials that save money on energy bills and require less energy to build and maintain.

Uganda: KCC, Contractor Clash Over Toilets

Public Convenient Cleaning Managers, a company that has been managing public toilets in Kampala city, has sued Kampala City Council for interfering with their toilet-management tender in the New Taxi Park.

The company's management says the tender that was awarded to it by the Kampala District Tender Board on April 18, 2005 for Shs12.5million, was to run for three years.

However, they say on June 3, 2006, the LC3 Chairman for Kampala Central Division, Mr Godffrey Nyakaana, cancelled their contract and awarded it to another contractor, who has now taken over management of the toilets.

The company was supposed to collect revenue on behalf of KCC, remitting Shs6.25 million per month.

They were also to maintain regular hygiene standards and to ensure the presence of water, electricity, toilet tissue and sanitary towels in the toilets.
