State says job-training contractor bilked it of $180,000

INDIANAPOLIS - The state accused a job-training contractor Thursday of bilking it out of as much as $180,000 through fraudulent billing.

The Marion County prosecutor's office filed a theft charge against Eric P. Ahlbrand, the former Indianapolis office manager for Jobworks Inc., and an obstruction of justice charge against a current employee, Ernest B. Walker, Inspector General David Thomas said.

An internal audit by the Family and Social Services Administration found the JobWorks office in Indianapolis billed the state for job-training hours and training that welfare recipients did not attend between Oct. 1, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2003. After the company learned it was being audited, it tried to alter client files, Thomas said.

The state could demand that JobWorks repay the state about $180,000, Thomas said.

Oak Hills High School to be Hesperia's third

Hesperia's third high school will bear the name of a neighboring community: Oak Hills High School is expected to open for classes in August 2009.

The Hesperia Unified School District school board voted for the name at this month's meeting, held September 11 at Sultana High School.

Although most schools in the district are named after a street adjacent to the campus, Oak Hills High School isn't the first school that won't be following that naming convention. The new high school will be located on Ranchero Road in between Coyote Trail and Cataba Road.

"A majority of schools are named after the street. We do have a few exceptions out there, where the school really isn't named after a street or is not even located on the street that it's named after," said George Landon, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for the Hesperia Unified School District.

Chantilly's persuades real men to eat quiche

And we won't write about every new joint that opens in this column (check out our Business Roundup on Fridays and Latest Developments on Sunday for that information), but we'll let you know about some places that might have slipped below your radar. Bon appetit!

"Real men don't eat quiche."

Remember back in the early 1980s when the book by that name made the best-seller lists? At the time, everyone took its tongue-in-cheek title to be gospel truth. So much, that more than 20 years later, if the subject of quiche arises, someone is sure to summon up that tired saying.

I say, forget outdated logic. In the 21st century, not only do real men eat quiche, the ones who decline it must have never tried it. And thanks to the support of a Gastonia restaurant, I've managed to convince at least one man to come around to my way of thinking -- albeit reluctantly.
