Newark to appeal $38M award to reservoir contractor

NEWARK -- Newark said today it plans to appeal the $38.4 million settlement a federal jury awarded to a contracting firm that claimed it was wrongly fired from the citys reservoir project.

The jury last week awarded Donald M. Durkin Contracting $38.4 million, well above the citys $30 million annual budget. Durkin received $13.4 million for being fired improperly from working on the citys reservoir in February 2004 and an additional $25 million for violation of the firms constitutional rights.

In a separate claim, the jury ordered Newark to pay $567,000 to reservoir designer URS Corp. for unpaid bills and legal fees related to the reservoir.

The original project cost was $19 million.

City leaders met in an executive session at the end of tonights regularly scheduled council meeting to discuss their next steps.

Speakers lodge protests against Central project;

PARKSLEY -- The future of the former Central Middle School near Painter remains uncertain months after the county unloaded the building and property for $715,000 to a Florida-based produce dealer.

The Accomack County Planning Commission held a hearing on Wednesday to consider a conditional-use application to convert the building to a 50-unit apartment house for 200 seasonal farm workers.

Batista and Evelyn Madonia, the applicants and owners of East Coast Packers and Brokers of Plant City, Fla., were not at Wednesday's public hearing at an elementary school here when the planning commission voted to table their request until new information could be considered.

The Madonias have said, through their application and attorney, that at the center of their project is an adaptive reuse of the former school.

Curbed LA Interviews: Siegel Speaks

The second in our semi-regular series of interviews with the architects, planners and thinkers who are shaping the future of Los Angeles. Today, on this most holy of days, we atone for McMansions, unsustainable development, and overpriced real estate with an interview with Jennifer Siegal of the Office of Mobile Design, known for its innovative green prefab design.

Let's begin with pre-fab first. What is the typical cost of an OMD pre-fab home? How long does it take to construct? What is the ratio of land costs to labor and materials cost today? Most of the homes we are designing are customized for the client and the specific site. The homes are California manufactured steel dwellings and offer cutting edge sustainable material surfaces. We can put these 'mods' together to form any size house: 1 or 2 stories; choice of interior and exterior finishes; wired for security, sound and internet; all kitchen, bath, appliances; fireplaces; and as many 'green' and 'sustainable' materials as you like.
