Contractor Says He Gave $129,000 in Kickbacks to Honolulu Airport ...
Arthur K. Inada of Blueprint Builders Testified in a Federal Criminal Trial Against Four Defendants Accused of Operating an Elaborate Kickback Scheme for Which They Received Cash and Arranged for the Money Laundering of Political Contributions to Local Politicians By Malia Zimmerman, 10/6/2006 10:42:26 AM Arthur K. Inada, co-owner of the local repair and maintenance company, Blueprint Builders Inc., was asked to give an estimate for a sink repair job in a men's restroom facility at the Honolulu International Airport. The sink had come loose from the wall and needed new caulking. Rather than put the job out to bid as required by law to ensure the state taxpayers got the best deal for the service provided, airport managers told Inada to generate two additional false job estimates that were higher than his.

The sounds blasting from the radio across the vineyard were rock and roll and not Chopin, but the scene was straight from the hills of southern France and not southern Delaware. Nassau Valley Vineyards began its annual grape harvest Wednesday, Sept. 13, harvesting more than two tons of white chardonnay grapes. Soon to follow over the next month will be cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot grapes. "Overall this harvest will possibly be our best," said Jesse Pender, Nassau Valley Vineyards grower and wine maker. "It’s been a really good year for whites, but not our best ever." More than a dozen people spent about seven hours picking more than 2 acres of grapes. "We have to get them out of the field as quickly as possible once they are picked because temperature is detrimental to grapes," said Pender.
Daycare center hits a snag
MAGALIA -- Opening a daycare center in Magalia seemed like a good idea to some people, but members of the Paradise Pines Property Owners Association have other things to say about it. Property owner Larry Biegler and Pee Wee Preschool owner Mary Ann Cleary have been working on plans to open a center at 6260 Ponderosa Way to serve up to 80 children, at a location that was once a drug and alcohol rehabilitation home. The facility would be the first center-based child care available in Magalia. At a meeting Tuesday, the POA board of directors plans to review the request to operate a business in the area, where the association's code prohibits commercial use. But POA general manager Richard Alloway said the main issue is a fence the property owners began constructing that doesn't meet the 20-foot setback requirement.
